Things to do near Isla View, Glenisla

A wealth of outdoor activities are available in and around Glenisla from high and low level walking to fishing, golfing, cycling, horse-riding, mountain biking and ski-ing at Glenshee.

Golf – Some of the finest golf courses in the world and within

and easy drive from Glenisla. The closest are at Alyth, Glenisla 

and Strathmore – all about half an hour away from Isla View. Or

the Championship courses of Carnoustie, St Andrews,

Gleneagles and Rosemount are all under one hours drive

away. For a bit of variety, the highest golf course in Britain is at

Braemar which is about a half hour drive from Isla View to the north.

   Fishing – brown trout can be caught from the garden but for

  serious fishermen the RiverTay and its tributaries, the Isla and

  the Ericht are amongst the best salmon and trout rivers in

  Europe. The salmon season runs from 15 January to 15

  October and the brown trout season from 15 March to 6

  October


Field Sports – shooting and stalking are available on many of the private estates in and around Glenisla. There are large herds of red deer at the top on Glenisla about 4 miles up the glen from Isla View.

   Walking – a huge variety of walks are right on the doorstep

  of the house from clearly marked paths to the munros at the

  top of Glenisla. The Cateran Trail is a 103km/64 mile

  circular waymarked walk that follows the trails used by cattle

  thieves (“Caterans”) hundreds of years ago. The path runs

  up the hill in front of the house. Or Mount Blair is a focal

  point hill in the area with great views from the top and a

  viewfinder to identify local landmarks. Large herds of red

  deer are regularly seen in this area.

Winter Sports / Ski-ing – Glenshee ski centre is the largest winter sports centre in Britain is about a twenty minute drive from Isla View. It has 21 lifts & tows running over 4 mountains and 3 valleys. Glenisla itself is a popular centre forTelemark or Nordic cross country skiing with many kilometres of Nordic trails through the Glenisla forest.

Horseriding – Glenmarkie Riding Centre offers superb riding in beautiful countryside. The centre is about 5 minutes away from Isla View. Treks can last form one to four hours and the centre also runs 4-day long childrens’ summer pony camps

Cycling / Mountain Biking – Glenisla is right at the heart of

the very best cycling in Perthshire. Cycle hire facilities are

available in Alyth, Blairgowrie, Pitlochry and Glenshee.

Popular routes include the on-road route from Alyth up through

Glenisla returning via the Scottish Wildlife Trust reserve at Loch of

Lintrathen. A favourite spot for mountain biking is Blackcraig Forest

at Bridge of Cally and indeed the Glenisla Forest has a wealth of

tracks. some of which lead over to the other Angus glens of Glen

Prosen and Glen Clova.

Adventure Sports – Perthshire has more than 40 adventure sports operators where you can try your hand at rock climbing, abseiling, hang gliding, kayaking, canoeing and even canyoning and sphering.

 

  Glamis Castle - the legendary setting for

  Shakespeare's Macbeth,Glamis is a fairytale castle

  of spires, turrets and towers that has been a royal

  residence for over 600 years. Most recently it was

  the childhood home of HM the Queen Mother and

  the birthplace of HRH The Princess Margaret.

   



 Blair Castle - the ancient seat of the Duke of Atholl,

 Blair Castle is steeped in history. It is reputed to be

 the last castle obesieged in Britain and is the home of

 the only remaining private army in Europe, the

 Atholl Highlanders.

 


 

  Scone Palace - the historic crowning place for

  the Kings of Scotland.The Stone of Scone -

  also known as the Stone of Destiny - was kept

  at Scone for nearly 500 years. It was placed

  upon the Moot Hill and used in the coronations

  of the Kings of Scots until the end of the 13th

  century, when it was removed to Westminster

  by King Edward I, "the Hammer of the Scots".

  It was returned to Edinburgh Castle in 1996

  and was last used for the coronation of the

  present Queen Elizabeth.



Balmoral Castle - the Scottish home to the Royal family

is less than an hours drive from Isla View. Set in beautiful

Royal Deeside the castle is only open from March to the

end of July. The Queen is historically in residence during

August and then she normally attends the Braemar

Gathering on the first Saturday in September. Braemer

is only a half hour drive north from Isla View.


  

  Dunnotar Castle - Two miles south of

  Stonehaven this spectacular ruined fortress

  dates from the 12th century and was used in

  Zaffirelli's "Hamlet" starring Mel Gibson.





Scotland's Malt Whisky Trail

Speyside is the home of malt whisky and the only

malt whisky trail in the world starts about an hours

drive away from Isla View. Visit the homes of the

biggest malt whisky brands in the world such as

Glenfiddich, Glenlivet and Glen Grant.

Or for a completely different whisky experience visit

the nearest distillery to Isla View at Edradour near

Pitlochry. Edradour is the smallest distillery in Scotland that produces only 12 casks of malt whisky a week . Edradour is a neat cluster of buildings virtually unchanged in the last 150 years and is arguably the most picturesque distillery in Scotland.
